Our History

The history of Christ Church is significant, not only as a foundation and reminder of our purpose, but also as a motivation for future ministry. When the modern-day outpouring of the Holy Spirit began in the early 1900's at Azusa Street in Los Angeles, the effect was felt across the country and around the world. Washington, DC was no exception. As a direct result of this event a prayer meeting was started in 1907, which in 1922 became formally organized as The Full Gospel Assembly of Washington. (Note: Full Gospel Assembly is the original name of Christ Church).

The first two storefront locations were at 1242 Water St. in southwest D.C. and at 930 Pennsylvania Ave. NW (where the Dept. of Justice now stands). During years of growth and expansion the church purchased a building on the corner of North Capitol and K St. NE, and then years later at 915 Massachusetts Ave. NW. In 1967 the congregation moved to its present location on the corner of Massachusetts, Idaho, and 39th Street, NW.

Many, who are now and have been in various ministry positions around the world, can trace their roots back to Full Gospel Assembly/Christ Church. Significant in this "sending out" process was a ministry of People of Destiny Ministries called T.A.G. (Take and Give), which was "housed" at Christ Church in the 1970's. Thousand of young people attended (up to 2,200 at a time) these Tuesday night gatherings, many experiencing spiritual rebirth, while scores were challenged to give their lives in Christian service.

The founding purpose of the church which remains the focus of the church today is - to live the Great Commandment, which is to "love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength," and to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus to, "Go and make disciples of all nations, by the power of the Holy Spirit."
